Professional Profile
Dr. Gaurav Raj Chhabra is a physician, restorative micropigmentation practitioner and educator with more than two decades of professional experience across clinical medicine, health communication and professional training.
He completed his MBBS from B.J. Medical College, Ahmedabad in 2006. Over the past decade, he has developed focused expertise in scalp micropigmentation, becoming the earliest physician practitioners to advance the technique in India.
Dr. Chhabra is internationally trained, ScalpMicro® India affiliate and an award-winning SMP professional. He is the Founder and Director of Dermakraft®, an Integral micropigmentation ecosystem in Pune known for its clinical approach to follicle simulation, restorative micropigmentation and complex hair-loss presentations.
His work includes focus on advanced male pattern baldness, diffuse and female-pattern hair loss, post-hair-transplant density enhancement, FUT and FUE scar camouflage, corrective SMP and complete scalp simulation in alopecia universalis.
He is also the founder of Hellopecia®, a nonprofit alopecia-awareness initiative created to improve public understanding of alopecia, reduce stigma and encourage informed conversations around hair loss and its psychological impact.
A Physician’s Approach to Scalp Micropigmentation
Dr. Chhabra approaches scalp micropigmentation as a specialised form of non-surgical visual restoration.
His work is informed by the varied skin tones, undertones and pigmentary responses encountered in Indian patients. Pigment selection, implantation depth, impression size, density distribution and treatment spacing are planned to preserve a natural appearance as the result settles and ages.
His aesthetic benchmark is an outcome that remains discreet even at normal conversational distance—including from approximately an arm’s length. Particular attention is given to avoiding the enlarged, blurred, migrated or blue-grey impressions associated with poorly planned or incorrectly implanted SMP.
When appropriately selected, performed and maintained, SMP results can retain their appearance for approximately four to five years before refinement may be considered. Longevity varies with skin characteristics, pigment response, sun exposure, lifestyle and aftercare.
Clinical Relevance of Scalp Micropigmentation
Scalp micropigmentation has across the globe, become increasingly relevant within contemporary hair-loss practice, particularly where medical or surgical treatment cannot fully restore visible density.
Its applications include:
- advanced Norwood Grade VI–VII male pattern baldness, where donor availability or the extent of hair loss may limit transplantation;
- female-pattern hair loss and persistent diffuse scalp visibility;
- selected stabilised cases of chronic telogen effluvium;
- enhancement of visual density following hair transplantation;
- camouflage of suitable FUT and FUE transplant scars;
- correction of selected previously unsatisfactory SMP;
- complete scalp simulation in alopecia universalis.
Dr. Chhabra has particular experience in alopecia universalis, where the absence of natural reference points demands precise hairline design, controlled pigment use and uniform scalp coverage. The objective is a closely shaved appearance that remains natural and visually undetectable at conversational distance.
SMP can therefore complement dermatology, trichology and hair-transplant practice by providing an additional option when medical restoration is limited, surgery is unsuitable or the cosmetic result of earlier treatment remains incomplete.
Academic Contribution and Teaching Approach
At IIAM, Dr. Chhabra contributes specialised teaching in scalp micropigmentation and its integration into modern hair-loss practice.
His teaching begins with clinical indication and patient selection rather than technique alone. Doctors are encouraged to understand the cause and pattern of hair loss, the limits of available medical and surgical options, and the specific role SMP may play within a broader treatment plan.
His teaching emphasises:
- scalp and hair-loss assessment;
- clinical indications and contraindications;
- patient selection and expectation management;
- SMP planning across Indian skin tones;
- hairline design and facial proportion;
- pigment selection and long-term colour behaviour;
- natural impression size and density distribution;
- post-transplant density enhancement;
- scar camouflage and corrective planning;
- consent, aftercare and long-term maintenance;
- integration with dermatology, trichology and hair transplantation.
The purpose is not merely to introduce doctors to an additional procedure, but to help them understand when SMP is appropriate, how it should be planned and where its limitations lie.

Programmes to Which He Contributes
Advanced Course in Scalp Micropigmentation
Focused clinical and technical training for doctors and eligible practitioners seeking a systematic understanding of patient selection, scalp assessment, design, pigment behaviour, procedural planning and the integration of SMP into hair-loss practice.
Alopecia Awareness
Through Hellopecia®, Dr. Chhabra works to improve awareness of alopecia and its wider psychological and social impact.
The initiative seeks to encourage informed discussion, reduce stigma and help individuals understand the distinction between medical treatment, surgical restoration, cosmetic camouflage and acceptance-led choices.
