Professional Profile
Dr. Sumit Saxena is a Pune-based Plastic, Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgeon with more than two decades of professional experience in the field of plastic surgery. His extensive training and clinical practice encompass aesthetic surgery, reconstructive procedures, facial and body contouring, scar management and a range of surgical treatments designed to restore form, function and confidence.
He completed his MBBS, MS in General Surgery and MCh in Burns & Plastic Surgery from Smt. NHL Municipal Medical College, Ahmedabad, receiving advanced specialist training in plastic, reconstructive and burn surgery. His academic and clinical journey has been further distinguished by his achievement as a Gold Medalist in Plastic Surgery, reflecting his strong foundation in surgical knowledge and technical expertise.
Dr. Saxena currently serves as a Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Ruby Hall Clinic and Sahyadri Hospitals, Pune, where his clinical practice includes both aesthetic and reconstructive aspects of plastic surgery. His experience covers procedures involving the face and body, scar revision and management, reconstructive surgery and other areas where careful surgical planning is essential to achieving balanced and functional outcomes.
His approach is rooted in a detailed understanding of facial anatomy, tissue planes, wound healing, scar behaviour and individual anatomical variations. These principles allow him to assess each patient beyond the procedure itself, considering factors such as facial proportions, tissue quality, existing scars, skin characteristics and the relationship between different anatomical structures.
A Plastic Surgeon’s Perspective on Aesthetic Medicine
Aesthetic practice is most effective when surface treatment is understood in relation to the structures beneath it. Dr. Saxena brings this deeper surgical perspective to facial assessment—considering skeletal support, soft-tissue distribution, tissue descent, vascular anatomy, healing and scar response.
For dermatologists entering or expanding aesthetic practice, this perspective clarifies what non-surgical treatment can achieve, where its limits lie and when a surgical opinion or referral is more appropriate.
Academic Contribution and Teaching Approach
At IIAM, Dr. Saxena contributes to the Fellowship in Aesthetic Medicine through applied surgical anatomy, structural facial assessment and the relationship between surgical and non-surgical aesthetic options.
His teaching helps doctors move beyond a procedure-led view of facial aesthetics. Particular emphasis is placed on tissue planes, vascular danger zones, facial proportion, wound and scar behaviour, risk recognition, complication awareness and appropriate referral thresholds.
This contribution gives Fellowship participants a clearer understanding of how anatomy, tissue response and clinical boundaries should influence assessment, treatment planning and patient counselling.
